«I packed a week’s worth of thermal layers and didn’t worry about checking luggage. When I arrived, I was given a bag of gear and was asked to make sure everything fit. The clothing—which Tuque and Bicycle owner, Émilie Pelletier, sources from local businesses—was perfect. There was an insulated coat, snow pants, sturdy boots (and a boot warmer!), heavy gloves and a few extras including a toque, neck buff and cozy socks.»

“Getting to know this fat-tire bike

The brand new company Tuque & Bicycle Experiences offers the opportunity to get acquainted with the fat bike, the oversized-tire bicycle that is gaining more and more enthusiasts in Quebec.

Le Mag mentioned it two weeks ago: entrepreneur Émilie Pelletier was then in the final stretch of her crowdfunding campaign on the La Ruche platform. The founder of Tuque & Bicycle Experiences raised over $9,100, 182% of her $5,000 goal. This is not to mention about $3,000 in sales made at the Grand Marché de Québec, where Ms. Pelletier was present for seven days to promote her offer.

The young woman, who is certified as a tourist guide, offers a beginner’s route on flat terrain in downtown Quebec City. The loop starting from the Old Port passes through Place Royale and takes cyclists to the Grand Marché.

Émilie Pelletier started her guided tours last weekend and was pumped by the enthusiasm of her first participants when Le Mag spoke to her again on Monday. While the holiday season is already busy, there are usually departures among the three offered each day (9:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 3:30 pm). Evening outings would also be possible upon request, says the enthusiast who has been a fan of fat biking for only a year!

“I wanted to offer a bike tour. In winter, you have to stay warm by being active. I tried fat biking and really loved it. Once you’re properly dressed, it’s so much fun! I’m sensitive to cold, but it doesn’t take long to warm up while pedaling,” says the athlete, who leads groups of up to six people on snowy trails while telling them anecdotes about Quebec winters throughout history.

The entrepreneur eventually wants to offer other routes, such as a more challenging temporary outing with hills. A mobile rental fleet is also in development to make fat bikes available to those who would like to ride them on their own.” (French Article)

Autumn 2020 – Pre-launch

Student Entrepreneur, ACEE

“Where did the idea of combining tourism and fat biking come from?

As the business development manager at Cyclo Services and a certified tour guide, I quickly noticed that unique and authentic tourist experiences are increasingly in demand. Cyclo Services had already understood this for a while and was meeting this need by offering guided bike tours. The idea of moving, learning, visiting, and getting out of the city center, all by bike, appealed to me a lot, so much so that it inspired me to offer this service in winter with fat bikes.
